Mixed Doubles Round Robin Tournament Recap
Well, folks, what a night! March 8th, 2025 will forever be remembered as the day 17 fearless mixed doubles teams (34 players) took to the courts, braving the scorching BVI sun, the relentless competition, and the relentless battle against sweat-soaked grips and sunburned noses.
Group Stage Madness
The tournament was divided into four groups, and let’s just say, the action was as intense as a BVI August heatwave.
* Group A: The powerhouse duo of Bhuddy Salvador and Mary Grace Macayanan steamrolled through their group like a well-oiled tennis machine, finishing with a perfect 3-0 record. Right behind them, Luke Saltonstall and his better half, Kate Robledo, put up a solid fight with two wins and one loss, securing their spot in the quarterfinals.
* Group B: Sherylou Apelo and Bernardo Jiminez made an absolute statement, cruising through with a flawless 4-0 record without dropping a single game! (Seriously, did they even sweat?!) The veteran legends, Cherlin “Suga” Armstrong and Otis “Showtime” Jacobs, showed their tournament experience, finishing with three wins and one loss to lock in their quarterfinals berth.
* Group C: Donna Padilla and Vener Beniza played like they owned the courts, dominating with a clean 3-0 record. Meanwhile, Chris and Megan Farmer, straight off the ski slopes of Colorado, traded in snow boots for tennis shoes and fought their way into the quarterfinals, edging out the explosive duo Ciara Dunne and David Lim.
* Group D: Our junior stars made us so proud! Anaya Ganesan and Ronnie Samuel, playing in their first-ever official doubles tournament, showed zero fear, zero mercy, and zero losses, topping their group with a perfect 3-0 record. In second place, remember these names: Maggie Nolan and Luca Graziola—two of the youngest competitors in the tournament—held their nerve, battled the brutal heat, and punched their ticket to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 record.
Special mention to our youngest warrior, Matteo Graziola, who teamed up with his rockstar mom, Kerry. Fresh back on the courts after a hiatus, Kerry played her heart out, while Matteo held down the fort like a champ!
Quarterfinals – The Knockout Battles Begin
As the sun set and the heat finally gave us a break, the real showdowns began. Quarterfinal matchups were drawn, and the intensity went up a notch:
Bhuddy/Mary Grace took down Cherlin/Otis
Kate/Luke edged out Anaya/Ronnie
Sherylou/Bernardo powered through Megan/Chris
Donna/Vener ended Maggie/Luca’s dream run
Semifinals – The Final Four Showdown
Bhuddy & Mary Grace played lights-out tennis, taking down Kate & Luke to sprint into the finals.
Donna & Vener kept their momentum going, outlasting the relentless Sherylou & Bernardo.
Third Place Battle – The Comeback Kids
After their semifinal heartbreak, Sherylou & Bernardo recalibrated, fixed all the mistakes, and redeemed themselves with a strong win over Kate & Luke to secure third place.
The Grand Finale – A Battle for the Ages
And then, the moment we were all waiting for: Bhuddy & Mary Grace vs. Donna & Vener.
Big serves. Lightning-fast volleys. Precision lobs. This match had it ALL.
Bhuddy’s silky smooth hands combined with Mary Grace’s pinpoint lobs kept Donna & Vener on their toes.
The pressure was sky-high, and the match went the distance, leading to a decisive tiebreak.
But then—a dramatic twist!
Mary Grace’s BIG TOE CRAMPED UP.
As spectators held their breath, her trusty partner, Bhuddy, sprang into action like a medic on a mission. With magic hands, he fixed that toe right back in place, got Mary Grace back on her feet, and they fought till the very last point.
But Donna had other plans.
With her super presence at the net and unstoppable reflexes, she and Vener held their ground and sealed the deal with a 7-3 victory in the tiebreak!
